People Centred Excellence, has become the first provider in Europe to be certified for both Kata Competency and Lean Competency. The announcement means the people and organisations the company supports have the reassurance that their training and coaching will be delivered to a high standard.

People Centred Excellence was already an accredited provider of training courses through the Lean Competency System (LCS), developed by Cardiff University’s Lean Enterprise Research Centre (LERC). The LCS is a qualification framework that helps organisations and their people to grow their knowledge and perform better.

And now the company has also become a certified provider of training through the Kata Competency System (KCS), a newly created framework developed by LCS. The system is designed to train people and teams to use scientific thinking to tackle unforeseen challenges. It’s based on the ‘Toyota Kata’ approach to problem-solving and improvement.

Graham Canning, Founding Partner of People Centred Excellence, said: “We’re thrilled our business has secured dual accreditation for Lean Competency and Kata Competency.

“The LCS is a well-established, internationally recognised standard for delivering lean training. And now we’re proud to be providing training for the newly created KCS, too. The KCS is built on similar principles to the LCS but is more tailored to the Toyota Kata approach to solving problems and improving processes.”

People Centred Excellence was founded in 2019 by Graham and his fellow founding partner, Stuart Mitton. Since then, organisations and teams in a variety of sectors – from healthcare to manufacturing – have benefited from the company’s lean and operational excellence courses and consulting. Based in Market Drayton, the training specialist works with clients across the UK and internationally.

Sarah Wooledge, Head of Quality and Community for the Lean Competency System, said: “We are delighted that People Centred Excellence has added KCS accreditation to their existing LCS qualifications. Their very strong application shows the rigour and quality of their kata training and coaching. We look forward to hearing more about their kata training and improvement successes.”

People Centred Excellence is already working with the Quality Improvement Practitioner team at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust on their KCS certification for their Kata Coach programme.

Graham added: “Our KCS-certified courses are about more than just classroom-based learning. Participants learn how to practically apply kata and scientific thinking in their own workplace, and they can develop their skills and knowledge to genuinely call themselves a Toyota Kata Coach.”
