And its organisers, Shrewsbury Severn Rotary Club, are confident the final figure will be around the £5,000 mark.

“If this proves correct, it is about the same amount as donated last year which is an excellent result,” said club secretary Gareth Watkins.

“This is particularly special, when considering the ongoing cost of living crisis. And the Tree of Light’s success is completely down to the generosity of all our wonderful donors who continue to support us – and our Rotary Tree of Light – year on year.”

He added: “In the New Year this considerable sum of money will be put to good use supporting many local charities and communities.”

Anyone interested in making a donation to the Tree of Light can do so by emailing gdmw@hotmail.co.uk.
