The Trust, located near David Wilson Homes’ Clockmakers development in Whitchurch, started in 2006 and is a branch of the Greyhound Trust.

Lesley Rumney, Lead Volunteer at Greyhound Trust Shropshire and Borders, said: “The generous donation from David Wilson Homes is being used to purchase our Memory Christmas Tree, lights and baubles.

“The tree is at our kennels and people can purchase a bauble for a minimum donation of £2, which will be inscribed with the name of a beloved pet or person and put on the tree.

“It will also pay for a turkey dinner for the greyhounds that will be spending Christmas day in our kennels, and for them to have treats and a toy each.”

The trust’s kennels are based six miles south of Whitchurch, and it homes greyhounds across Shropshire, South Cheshire and into the Welsh Borders.

The Shropshire and Borders division of the charity is a small branch with up to seven greyhounds in kennels or fostered locally. Over the last 10 years, it has homed an average of 33 greyhounds a year.

Lesley said: “We would like to thank David Wilson Homes for its kind donation. We feel it is important to support local charities as, in our case, it keeps giving greyhounds in Shropshire opportunities for their new homes.

“Local people can benefit from charity support which often doesn’t find its way into rural areas. Our nearest neighbouring branches are in Warrington or Wolverhampton, with no other branches at all in North Wales. We home greyhounds over a wide area but also have several living happily in Whitchurch.”

Whilst it is part of a bigger organisation, the charity is a self-funding branch run by volunteers. This means that any money raised stays within the branch and is used for the care and welfare of the dogs in the kennels.

Founded in 1975, the Greyhound Trust has found loving homes for over 100,000 retired racing greyhounds. Each year it homes approx. 3,500 retired racing greyhounds and helps hundreds more.

Helen Lewis, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes Mercia, said: “We are proud to support the Shropshire and Borders Greyhound Trust and to help it celebrate Christmas in its own special way.

“We are dedicated to supporting community organisations like these all over the country to make our customers as connected as they can be to the communities that they are joining.”
