Wrexham pub raises thousands for local children's hospices
A community-spirited Wrexham pub has raised thousands of pounds for a local children’s hospice charity, following a successful fundraising programme.
The Golden Lion in Rossett held numerous events throughout November and December, raising £3,370 for Hope House Children’s Hospices. The pub has successfully raised over £6,000 for numerous charities last year including two hospices, Hope House in Oswestry and Tŷ Gobaith in Conwy, as well as supporting Prostate Cancer UK and other local community-based causes.
The money was raised through a series of popular pub quiz events including the Golden Lion’s annual 'Big Fat Quiz of the Year', a sell-out event held between Christmas and New Year.
Allan Parrington, general manager at The Golden Lion since 2009, has established the Hydes-owned pub as a real community hub for Rossett and surrounding areas.
Allan commented: “We are so grateful for the generosity of our regular customers and local community who once again got right behind us as they always do, including some generous anonymous donations. I never imagined we would raise such an amazing amount and it has inspired us as a team to continue our support of Hope House in 2025.
“This year we will look to repeat our successful Big Fat Quiz of the year which saw 160 customers battle it out for various prizes. We will host more events, holding a summer charity dinner, making a special Hope House pudding for a sales challenge in the pub and getting the team involved with a sponsored 14 mile challenge in February, amongst other fundraising activities.”
Cat Dowdeswell, Fundraising Team Leader at Hope House, said: “Allan has always been a force in the community and has played host to many local charities, engaging customers and local businesses along the way. Over the past eight years, the team at the Golden Lion have been incredible supporters of our hospices by taking part in our £50 Challenge, running numerous raffles, joining in with our Final Moments and Quality Moments campaigns and more recently, focusing their energies on a month-long fundraising challenge.
“During December they held a locals evening, a Christmas raffle and their renowned Big Fat Quiz of the Year. These events totalled an incredible £3,370 which takes their lifetime donations to over £8,000, which is truly amazing. I take my hat off to Allan and all the team for their hard work. We cannot wait to see what happens in 2025. Thank you so much.”
Managing director of Hydes Brewery, Adam Mayers said: “The Golden Lion is at the heart of the community in Rossett. Hydes fully supports the charity efforts of all of the pubs across its estate and events such as the fundraising programme run by Allan and his team help our pubs to continue to be an integral part of community life.”
