We are definitely one of those families. There is just something magical about a ride on a beautiful steam train at this time of year.

Christmas hats and jumpers on, we arrived at Kidderminster’s Severn Valley Railway station ready for our 11.30am journey.

This year we were getting on the Santa train, previously we’ve tried the Enchanted Express and Steam in Lights from Bridgnorth.

The fact that we return every year says it all and we really enjoy having our own compartment for up to six people.

The first-class compartments have luxurious seating with plush, upholstered armchairs, in rich, period-appropriate colours like burgundy or green. Wooden panelling and brass fixtures enhance the vintage feel. The standard-class compartments feel luxurious too with open-plan or enclosed compartments. Comfortable but simpler upholstery, with large windows providing picturesque views of the surrounding countryside.

These trains make you wonder where modern train travel has got it so wrong.

After 30 minutes onboard, we got off at the beautiful, old-fashioned little station in Arley. We were faced with a huge marquee serving food and drinks before entering the seated arena to watch a half-hour pantomime.

The panto was really funny - especially the character Poirat, a cheese-obsessed detective who is actually from Birmingham (despite the French accent).

We hopped back on board and headed back to Kidderminster to find Santa had put a present for each child on their seats - and the gifts were lovely and plush too.

Prices range based on the group size and date, starting at £67 for two people to £285 for a six-person compartment on Christmas Eve. Each child receives a gift, and sweet treats are provided for all.

From the moment you arrive, the festive atmosphere is palpable. Stations along the route are decked out with twinkling lights, garlands, and holiday decorations that immediately set the tone.

Christmas carols play in the background, adding to the charm. Volunteers and staff, dressed in vintage uniforms and often donning Santa hats, warmly welcome passengers, enhancing the cosy and cheerful vibe.

Kidderminster Station was full of Christmas cheer, a brass band played and later a choir with lots of photo opportunities with moving reindeers and one of Santa’s sleighs to hop inside.

Mulled wine, hot chocolate, and mince pies are available, offering a warming treat for adults and children alike.

Why do we return every single year?

For our family, the Severn Valley Railway Santa Train is a magical journey that truly captures the festive spirit, offering a blend of nostalgia, holiday cheer, and family-friendly entertainment.

Whether you’re a long time railway enthusiast or simply looking for a unique Christmas experience, the Santa Train delivers an unforgettable day out.
