The man, who was 47 and from the Shrewsbury area, was confirmed dead at the scene on Monday.

The collision, which involved a grey Ridgback mountain bike and a silver Mini Countryman closed the A458 between Ford and the Churncote island.

The cyclist suffered serious head injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the Mini, a man in his 30s, was not injured.

Duty Inspector Scott Barnes, of West Mercia Police, said: ""The police received a call at about 5.40pm of a collision involving a car and a cyclist. The man's next of kin have been informed.

"The car driver did not require hospital treatment."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "On arrival, crews found the cyclist, a man, at the roadside.

"He was in cardiac arrest and already receiving CPR from an off duty nurse and police.

"Ambulance staff took over and administered advanced life support but unfortunately it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

"The driver of the car was uninjured in the incident."

Police investigating the incident say they would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash or saw either of the vehicles, and the manner in which they were being driven, before the collision occurred.
